I'm not a developer, but even I can safely guess that it is easier to put accessibility in as you do every step of the process, rather than trying to shoehorn it in after the whole (inaccessible) app is finished. The impression I get is that 98% of Linux developers, when they think about accessibility at all, just think of it as something they might some day get around to doing.

New #preprint „How Much Replication Is Enough? Balancing Novelty And Replication In A Truth-Driven Evolutionary Simulation“ (first authored by Kaitlyn Harper @kati-harper.bsky.social@bsky.app in the Meta-Rep project).

In the paper we ask: given limited scientific resources, how much should we be allocating to replication vs original research? We use an agent based model of cultural evolution to reveal the ideal allocation of resources under a variety of scientific environments and conditions.

A key takeaway: Replication seems to act like a corrective response to problems in the research environment, rather than a universal good.

It's been a busy August of NetBSD hacking.

Notable changes include faster booting for very slow systems! A new optional script caching mechanism (rcorder_cache=YES) and various long-obsolete services are now disabled by default.

The in-kernel cleaner is now used by default for Log File Systems.

Support for Realtek/Killer E5000 5 gigabit Ethernet was added.

Cursor acceleration was added to the GeForce framebuffer driver.

Various disk-related commands were extended to show GPT label names.

Wrote a bunch of dork-ass Python this weekend and I feel great about it.

You don’t actually: you need to make wage growth outpace than house price inflation. If house prices go down, all of the problems with negative equity appear. But if house prices grow at 1%/year and wages grow at 5%/year then housing becomes more affordable.

But that does require a bunch of structural changes to the economy.

I am not trying to be elitist. “programmer” isn’t a high title. but it is my profession, and I am a worker.

codebases rapidly becoming slop, coworkers suffering cognitive decline, and the constant threat of losing your job unless you use the machines causing all of this more, are constant threats. the job I previously loved is now so stressful I’ve physically hurt myself doing it. I had to work through those injuries because my labor is actively under threat, and I no longer have the luxury of being able to take care of myself.

I don’t think I’m better than liam. I wish I could subsist on the work he does. some of my friends (yo @davidgerard) are tech journalists who subsist on the work. I would love to do that.

but liam’s profession is not my profession. mine has dangers and stressors his doesn’t, and vice versa.

if you’re a journalist and a laborer is telling you you’re misrepresenting their field, you should listen.

I'm super proud of how the #openstreetmap community responds to things like Trump's executive order to rename Lake Ontario: the name remains tagged according to what is commonly-used in the communities nearest the feature, and they add a separate tag to note the name that appears in official records of different jurisdictions. So, you could seek out an app that uses the official US name, but most apps will use the common name.
